Program Description:
Jack C. and Dorothy D. Pitts

In honor of Jack C. and Dorothy D. Pitts, Janet Pitts Beckman, in collaboration with Macalester, has established the Jack C. and Dorothy DeSimone Pitts Endowment for Study Abroad to support qualified Macalester students.  This scholarship is intended to support undergraduate study in the social sciences and humanities abroad. Award amounts range and are administered through the Center for Study Away. 


Students must be enrolled in a Macalester approved study away semester program that requires direct enrollment in a foreign university where the courses are not taught in English. (Students will need the relevant foreign language proficiency.)

Selection criteria:

The Director of the Center for Study Away at Macalester, in consultation with the relevant program sponsor and the Study Away Review Committee will consider the following criteria in the selection process:
  • Seriousness of purpose, including: how well the applicant articulates a clear link between their educational goals and the program offerings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to language learning.
  • Strong academic record as reflected in the cumulative grade point average at Macalester.

Funding Criteria:

The scholarship is intended to cover any costs directly incurred from participation in the semester of study away, including but not limited to: room, board, tuition, travel, visa, books. Typical awards range from $1,000 to $1,500.  All financial arrangements will be coordinated by the Macalester College Center for Study Away in collaboration with the Financial Aid Office and the program sponsor.
